Bio

Hi. I'm Mara.

I've always loved to tell stories of all kinds. When I was young, I would spend a lot of my free time writing and illustrating short stories or jotting down thoughts and poems in one of my dozen notebooks. A common thread in much of my early writing endeavors was food—whether it was the piece I wrote and illustrated in the second grade about a family of birds making a cake for a birthday party or the menus I'd write up for restaurants and bakeries I'd invent in my head (followed by writing—rave, of course—reviews for these establishments).

I was born and raised in South Florida and moved north to attend college at Brandeis University. I'm also a graduate of the Columbia Publishing Course, an intensive summer graduate program at Columbia University about all aspects of book, magazine, and digital publishing. My passion for food has also remained strong, and I recently graduated with my master's degree in gastronomy/food studies (established in collaboration with Jacques Pépin and Julia Child) from BU.

Today, I am lucky to tell stories for a living. I'm a senior writer and editor for Boston University's Office of Marketing & Communications, where I  oversee a number of award-winning alumni publications and have covered a breadth of fascinating stories about science and technology, medicine, education, travel, arts and entertainment, food, and more (see a selection of pieces here).
